How to Choose the Best Trout Lure?

The lures for trout are available in many shapes, sizes and colors. This means there isn’t a lure to work at all times and in any situation. If you want to know what lure to use for trout, you need to determine the feeding tendencies of the targeted prey, the time of the year when you’re fishing and the water conditions. Your fishing technique is also very important.

What size should my trout lure be?

Trout aren’t very large fish, not to mention their mouth is small. The size of your lure has to depend on the water conditions and depth. The deeper the water, the bigger the lure. Obviously, bigger lure should also be used when targeting larger trout.

Does the lure material matter?

Trout are fish with incredible eyesight. They can see colors that aren’t visible to humans. This is why they’re attracted to brightness and motion. The lure material that works best for them offers a lot of action and looks realistic. While silver and nickel look exactly the same for us, the trout see the difference in reflection. If you fish for trout in cold waters that aren’t clear, you need more flash, so choose a yellow or orange material that’s fluorescent. In case you’re going for trout in warm and clear waters, choose a material that has natural colors and isn’t very reflective. When it comes to durability, choose machined brass or steel. ABS plastic is also resistant to corrosion and saltwater conditions.

How about the hooks?

Since they have such good eyesight, trout can immediately detect hooks, so it would be a good idea to use lures that have the hooks discreetly placed and even hidden. When fishing for this species, the hook should always be small in size. Treble hooks can be effective for trout, but they have the downside that they’re deadly and the trout tend to swallow them. Sizes 14 and 16 are ideal when you want to keep the prey, while sizes 10 and 12 are ideal for the catch and release game.

What’s great about artificial trout lures is that for as long as they’re not damaged or snagged, they can be used over and over again. They only need to be washed and stored properly, so they’re not at all high maintenance.

The best thing you could do when choosing your trout lures is to go for something that looks realistic and to determine the fishing conditions.
